STraffic (CEO Moon Chan-jong), a transportation solutions company, announced on the 15th that it has acquired SIL4 certification for the Korean Urban Railway Signal System (KTCS-M) on-board device. This is the result of approximately one year after obtaining SIL4 certification for KTCS-M ground equipment in October 2022. SIL (Safety Integrity Level) is an international certification standard that measures the level of safety and reliability related to electronics, electricity, and signals of various industrial equipment, including railroads, with SIL4 being the highest level.
KTCS-M is a next-generation railway signaling system that can control trains in real time by applying two-way continuous wireless communication technology without using track circuits on the ground. It consists of several solutions, including an on-board device that automatically adjusts train speed and vehicle spacing and transmits vehicle status to ground devices, and a ground device that controls the train based on the received operating status.
STraffic has been developing related solutions by taking over the national project of the Korea Railroad Research Institute, in which Samsung SDS and POSCO ICT participated. The ground system of KTCS-M, developed independently by S-Traffic, completed SIL4 certification, the highest safety grade, in October 2022, and the onboard system also obtained SIL4 certification, making it possible to have a completed railway signal development system.
