This project includes the establishment and pilot project of a new payment system (hereinafter referred to as tagless system) using tagless and QR code, a non-contact public transportation payment method, for the first time in sections operated by the Seoul Transportation Corporation.

The tagless system is a payment method that allows you to pay fares by passing through a dog tag using wireless communication technology such as Bluetooth applied to a smartphone without tagging the transportation card to the terminal.

STraffic upgrades the speed gates in 174 passages at 70 stations and simultaneously applies Bluetooth technology to provide tagless operation in 10 passages at 4 Seoul Transportation Corporation stations (Yongdap Station on Line 2, Oksu Station on Line 3, and Dongjak/Sadang Station on Line 4). We plan to build a system.

STraffic plans to reflect this in its design to minimize the Bluetooth location measurement error range (approximately 1 to 3 meters) in order to accurately charge users. In addition, we aim to become the world's first commercialization through technology verification by applying UWB (Ultra-Wide Band) technology, which can precisely measure position (error range 5 to 10 cm), to a new speed dog marking device.

Seoul Transportation Corporation will verify the technology through a six-month pilot operation of the ‘tagless system’ targeting its employees. Afterwards, through consultations between relevant organizations, the plan is to expand the ‘tagless system’ to all stations so that it can be used by general passengers as well.

An STraffic official said, “We have set out to build a new concept transportation card system by combining UWB technology, which is emerging as the next-generation wireless communication technology in parallel with Bluetooth technology, with subway gates.” He added, “As it is possible to get on and off without a transportation card tag, it will help users, including the transportation vulnerable, “We expect that convenience will increase and that we will secure another competitive product to advance overseas through the world’s first commercialization of the subway fare collection sector,” he said.
