[Engineering Journal Reporter Ha-nui Kim] Recently, the Korea Railroad Research Institute's Advanced Infrastructure Convergence Laboratory is conducting research on five topics to secure 'luxury K-digital infrastructure railway technology'.
These are the ‘5Cs’ of the world’s best technology (Cutting Edge), convergence with cutting-edge technology (Convergence), development of eco-friendly railway components (Carbon Free), support for technical difficulties faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (Cooperation), and ensuring sustainability (Consistency). The specific details are as follows.
In the world's best technology (Cutting Edge), 'development of a railway infrastructure monitoring system based on InSAR satellite information' converts existing point-level railway infrastructure monitoring into large-area (30×50km) automated monitoring to ensure data accuracy of satellite information. At the same time as verifying, optimization plans are being derived for railway facilities.
In particular, we are conducting verification by building and operating a test bed for the Osong Comprehensive Test Line, and improving accuracy through comparative analysis of satellite information and railway subsidence data for the first time in the world through comparison with actual subsidence data of the railway roadbed during the construction of the Honam High-Speed Railway. A plan is being prepared.
In the field of convergence with cutting-edge technology, a research group was formed for 'Development of a BIM-based integrated platform for railway infrastructure life cycle management', production of a prototype of an integrated operation system for railway infrastructure life cycle management, IFC viewer, and calculation of quantity and construction cost. By developing modules, we are promoting technological independence to avoid dependency on foreign products. Currently, we are trying to maximize utilization by applying it on a pilot basis to the Wolgot-Pangyo route.
In the field of development of eco-friendly railway components (Carbon Free), we have developed eco-friendly sleepers based on low-carbon waste plastic through ‘Development of eco-friendly sleepers using low-carbon recycled materials’ and are reviewing their application as an alternative to wooden sleepers.
In particular, we completed the development of plastic sleepers using waste plastic and steelmaking slag by recycling 100% recycled plastic and steelmaking slag, an industrial by-product from the steelmaking process, while conducting an evaluation of the bending and compression performance and environmental impact of prototypes. Based on satisfaction of international standards (AREMA, ISO 12856), we are seeking to spread research results through performance verification.
In addition, in the field of cooperation for technical difficulties faced by small and medium-sized enterprises, we are responding to on-site technical difficulties caused by the raised roadbed of the Suseo High-Speed Railway Yulhyeon Tunnel through research on 'Suseo High-Speed Railway Epoxy Direct Track Safety Review and Design', and vertical alignment reconstruction of the raised section of the Suseo High-Speed Railway Yulhyeon Tunnel. Safety was verified through design and direct track indoor performance tests.
Recently, through 3D computerized analysis of the newly developed track, it has been proven that the performance is equivalent to the existing Rheda 2000 concrete track, and it has also passed the technical suitability review of the railway facility performance verification of the direct track system.
Lastly, in the field of sustainability, we are continuously promoting government support and new project research and development, contributing to the establishment and revision of policies, standards, and guidelines needed by the country.

“The reality is that it is difficult to achieve ‘luxury K-digital infrastructure railway technology’ with only our lab’s capabilities and achievements,” said Kim Hyun-ki (photo), head of the Advanced Infrastructure Convergence Research Department at the Korea Railroad Research Institute. “We have experts in various fields such as power, signal communication, logistics, and artificial intelligence, and we are seeking convergence into the cutting-edge infrastructure field through collaboration and discussions with them,” he explained.
He added, “In addition, we plan to conduct research and development as a gateway technology by utilizing and considering the sites, technologies, and requirements of universities, research institutes, construction and industrial complexes, and industries.”
This year, the research that the Advanced Infrastructure Convergence Laboratory is focusing on with the motto of convergence is the ‘Development of a simulator and operation service based on digital transformation (DX) technology for advanced earthquake response.’
To apply DX technology, BIM (Building Information Modeling), railway facility maintenance DB, spatial information technology (GIS), structural physical (numerical) model modeling, simulation technology using game engines, external data acquisition technology (orthoimagery, PCD, etc.) ), internal data acquisition technology (smart sensors, etc.), actual structural test data, railway vehicle DB, and user-friendly visualization technology were defined.
Based on technology development and systemization through the convergence of these key element technologies, abnormal climate and extreme natural disasters (earthquakes, heavy rain) are simulated in virtual space, and the behavior of railway facilities (targeted on the Osong Comprehensive Test Line) in virtual space is measured in disaster situations. Research is being conducted with the ultimate goal of analyzing and establishing a digital-based comprehensive railway disaster response system.
Director Kim said, “Based on the ‘convergence’ of the ‘5C’ technology fields, we want to lay the foundation for the introduction of DX technology in the railroad infrastructure field,” adding, “World-class technology in disaster safety management and maintenance, focusing on the service layer suitable for railroads.” “We will lay the foundation to secure this,” he said.
He continued, “Based on standardized information management standards in the field of railway infrastructure asset management, we have developed a decision-making system that can clearly support decision-making on railway infrastructure maintenance, so as to prioritize railway infrastructure maintenance, and determine maintenance and performance improvement decisions. “I want to contribute to the advancement of maintenance strategy establishment, including decision-making and preparation of input budget strategies,” he added.
Currently, the Advanced Infrastructure Convergence Laboratory secures applicability in the railway field through active convergence of cutting-edge technologies and at the same time develops technologies that contribute to the nation. It supports on-site technical difficulties that small and medium-sized enterprises cannot solve, and provides win-win technologies required by national policy. Supporting development.
Among various fields, in relation to the development of railway facility asset management decision support system technology, we are advancing the decision support system for maintenance and performance improvement of national railway facilities based on Unicorns Co., Ltd.'s experience in the Seoul city big data system construction project. In the field of DX technology development, we are developing technology to produce 3D PCD based on artificial intelligence using orthophotos using drones with Systech Co., Ltd.
Director Kim said, “I think there is a need for continued interest and budgetary support for the development of K-digital infrastructure railway technology.” He added, “Our lab will more actively pursue collaboration with the National Railroad Authority’s Future Strategy Research Institute and Korea Railroad Corporation researchers to secure a continuous budget.” I want to do it. “I hope that the government and society will also come up with measures to actively support research and development with the mindset of nurturing seeds for the future.”
