In 2026, the digital era of Busan urban railway based on integrated railway wireless network (LTE-R) will open.

Busan Transportation Corporation (CEO Byung-jin Lee) announced on the 23rd that it will expand and introduce the integrated railway wireless network (LTE-R), which was built on Busan Line 1 for the first time in the world in 2017, to Lines 2 to 4 by 2026.

Busan Transportation Corporation is promoting the project as part of the 'Essential tasks for smart maintenance of railway facilities' selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

'LTE-R' is a wireless network that optimizes LTE (700 MHz frequency band), the 4th generation mobile communication technology, for the railway environment. It uses the existing one-to-one frequency VHF (Line 2) and one-to-multiple TRS (Lines 3 and 4). Unlike a wireless communication network that supports only the transmission and reception of voice and text, it supports video and large-capacity data transmission. This enables quick and efficient response between engine drivers, station staff, and traffic control not only in normal times but also in various disaster situations, and also allows preemptive monitoring of safety hazards during train operation.

The project is a large-scale construction project to build wireless communication facilities in the 78.1km long urban railway main line section of Lines 2 to 4, 74 stations and depots, and LTE-R for 93 trains. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2026. In 2018, the Busan Metropolitan Railway will become the first urban railway in the country to use a single high-speed data communication wireless network on all lines.

Byeong-jin Lee, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, said, “Through this project, a unified wireless communication system will be established across all Busan urban railway lines, making it possible to operate safer and more systematic urban railways.” He added, “Based on the 4th Industrial Revolution, the railway’s “We will become a representative urban rail operator that leads digital transformation,” he said.
