Korea Expressway Corporation has ordered a 9.8 billion won ‘data-based smart road integration platform construction’ project to digitalize highways.
The purpose of the project is to increase public convenience by integrating road information big data into a platform, improving spatial information and data quality, and improving user environment (UI) and user experience (UX). Korea Expressway Corporation has established a road integration platform and is promoting digital transformation of all branches. The road integration platform is cloud-based.
Korea Expressway Corporation begins with system reorganization. So far, administrative work has been handled with a focus on documents. The reliability of data status for each task was low due to missing data input. We plan to unify numerous data that were not entered into the system into a platform.
Based on this, Korea Expressway Corporation builds a road information big data platform. It was difficult to collect learning data due to the distribution of source data. By building a platform, data analysis and predictions can be made more precise.
The road information big data platform provides accurate data-based information such as traffic accident risk, disaster risk, and traffic accident analysis. Ultimately, it delivers necessary road information to the public in real time, helping them use the road safely.
We will also begin collecting data using cutting-edge technologies such as high-precision road maps, drones, and IoT data. A high-precision road map is an electronic map that implements a digital twin of the road, including lanes, signs, and road facilities, based on GPS. While highway sites have been managed based on the relative distance from a specific starting point, now it is possible to manage facilities accurately and quickly with GPS conversion.
We plan to update the road status with videos and photos taken by drones, and manage the road life cycle with IoT data and 3D scanners.
Korea Expressway Corporation's 'Highway Digital Transformation' project is also related to the national tasks of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is carrying out the national task of 'National Road Network Digital Twin', and for this purpose, the digitalization of highways is necessary. The policy direction is the same as the data-based administration promoted by the digital platform government.
The Korea Expressway Corporation's integrated road construction project is scheduled to begin next month and continue for a total of 20 months until June 2025.
An official from the Korea Expressway Corporation said, “In the short term, accident prevention monitoring can be strengthened, and in the mid to long term, safety facilities can be increased by analyzing points where many accidents occur.” He added, “In addition, because highway digitalization is also linked to autonomous driving, “We can also prepare for future mobility changes,” he said.
