STraffic America Finalized Contract for BART Systemwide Fare Gate Upgrade
Fare gates across the Bay Area will be replaced by 2026 and provide riders with an improved experience.

SAN FRANCISCO- STraffic America, LLC, a global leader of sustainable transit solutions, has finalized a $47 million contract for the design, development, and implementation of new systemwide fare gates for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. The overall $90 million Next Generation Fare Gate Project aims to overhaul safety, improve the rider experience, and reduce fare evasion. By 2026, all fare gates across BART will be replaced with an updated, inclusive design that will provide riders with an improved experience while deterring fare evasion.
While the design has yet to be finalized, STraffic has worked extensively with members of the community, particularly the ADA community, to ensure the fare gates meet the needs of all riders. LED lighting on the swing barriers and pathways will enhance accessibility for visually impaired riders. Advanced 3D sensors will detect if someone is in a wheelchair or has a bike, stroller, or luggage with them, allowing for more time before the swing barrier closes. The new fare gate system will improve efficiency, allowing for faster entry and exit of large crowds without impeding foot traffic. Additionally, the new gates will be designed to be more difficult to penetrate without a paid ticket.
"We are pleased that STraffic America is BART's partner in the systemwide upgrade of our fare gates” said BART General Manager Robert Powers. “Fare gate upgrades and station hardening are a vital part of our mission to create a safer, more efficient, and more inclusive BART experience for all our riders. With the help of STraffic, we are investing in our future and setting a new standard for public transit accessibility and security.”

"We are honored that BART has chosen STraffic as its partner in its systemwide fare gate upgrades,” said STraffic, America CEO Ken Cho. “We are excited to bring our experience and expertise to the talented BART team. We are confident that working together as partners, BART and STraffic will provide a systemwide fare-gate upgrade on time and on budget while serving the needs of all riders."
As a provider of fare payment solutions, technology integrations, and other mobility technologies around the world, STraffic brings its collective experience to collaborate closely with BART staff to develop a design and timeline for the new fare gates, which will be tested at West Oakland Station later this year.
