Introduction

J-TaaS (Jeonnam Tourism-as-a-Service) is a smart tourism platform developed by Jeollanam-do, South Korea, to enhance travel experiences for both domestic and international visitors. It provides comprehensive tourism information, including transportation, accommodations, restaurants, and attractions, all accessible through a mobile app and website.

The platform was designed to streamline the tourism experience by offering one-stop reservation and payment services for various travel-related activities. Initially launched in six cities (Mokpo, Yeosu, Suncheon, Naju, Gwangyang, and Muan) in December 2022, J-TaaS expanded to all 22 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do by June 2023

Challenges

Despite its ambitious vision, the implementation of J-TaaS faced several obstacles:

  1. Data Integration & Standardization – Unifying diverse tourism-related data from local businesses, transportation providers, and hospitality services into a single platform.

  2. User Adoption & Accessibility – Encouraging tourists and local businesses to actively use the platform while ensuring multi-language support for international visitors.

  3. Technical Infrastructure – Developing a secure and scalable system capable of handling high traffic volumes and real-time transactions.

  4. Stakeholder Collaboration – Coordinating efforts between local governments, tourism operators, and technology providers to ensure seamless service delivery.

To meet above functions, STraffic had to consider following key features.

  • Users can add multiple tourism services to their cart and make a single payment for all selections.

  • The platform offers real-time recommendations for travel routes, attractions, and festivals in Jeollanam-do.

  • Multilingual support is available in English, Japanese, and Chinese, making it more accessible for international tourists.

  • A pre-launch event in June will provide 4,000 early users with coffee coupons, and those who leave reviews after purchasing services will have a chance to win prizes worth 200,000–300,000 KRW.

  • The platform can be downloaded from Google Play Store and Apple App Store under the name "Jeonnam Tourism Platform (J-TaaS)."

Solution

To overcome these challenges, J-TaaS implemented the following strategies:

  • Integrated Tourism Data System – A cloud-based platform that aggregates real-time travel, accommodation, and attraction details from various providers.

  • Multi-Language Support – Offering services in English, Japanese, and Chinese to enhance accessibility for international tourists.

  • Smart Payment & Booking System – Enabling one-stop reservations and payments for transportation, lodging, dining, and activities through a single interface.

  • Public-Private Partnership – Collaborating with local businesses and tourism operators to ensure continuous platform updates and service improvements.
