Introduction

STraffic played a crucial role in the KTCS-M (Korea Train Control System-Metro) pilot project, specifically in Section 2, covering the Jeongbalsan to Daehwa segment of the Ilsan Line. This initiative aimed to modernize Korea’s urban railway signaling system, ensuring enhanced safety, efficiency, and automation in metro operations.

The KTCS-M pilot project was designed to replace conventional signaling systems with wireless, bidirectional train control technology, eliminating the need for track circuits. STraffic, as part of a consortium, was responsible for manufacturing, installing, and integrating the KTCS-M system in Section 2.

Challenges

There are following key factors.

  1. Seamless Integration – Ensuring compatibility with existing railway infrastructure while transitioning to a wireless-based system.

  2. Safety & Certification – Meeting SIL4 (Safety Integrity Level 4) standards, the highest level of railway safety certification.

  3. Operational Efficiency – Optimizing train intervals, speed control, and real-time monitoring without disrupting ongoing metro operations.

  4. Technological Adaptation – Overcoming initial resistance to adopting wireless train control over traditional track-based systems.

Solution

Here are several factors as follows.

  • Advanced Wireless Communication – Implementing continuous bidirectional communication for real-time train control.

  • AI-Driven Monitoring – Utilizing predictive analytics to enhance operational efficiency and prevent system failures.

  • Modular System Design – Ensuring scalability and adaptability for future metro expansions.

  • Collaborative Testing & Validation – Conducting extensive trials to guarantee system reliability before full deployment.

Result

This initiative underscores STraffic’s leadership in intelligent railway signaling solutions, paving the way for next-generation metro systems in Korea.

  • Successful Implementation – KTCS-M was fully integrated into Section 2, demonstrating its feasibility for broader adoption.

  • Enhanced Metro Operations – Improved train scheduling, automation, and passenger safety.

  • Foundation for Expansion – The project set the stage for nationwide implementation of KTCS-M in urban rail networks.
