Introduction

Straffic has secured a contract for the purchase and installation of automated fare collection (AFC) systems for Phase 1 of Gwangju Metro Line 2. This project is a key component of Gwangju’s urban transit expansion, aiming to enhance efficiency, security, and passenger convenience.

1. Project Scope

The AFC system will be deployed across 20 stations along the 17 km-long Phase 1 section of Line 2. Unlike Line 1, which follows a linear route, Line 2 is designed as a circular metro line, improving accessibility for residential areas.

2. Key Features

• Remote-Controlled Unmanned Stations: 15 out of 20 stations will operate using Straffic’s advanced remote-control technology, reducing operational costs while maintaining high security and efficiency.

• Seamless Ticketing Integration: The system allows Gwangju Metro Line 1 and Line 2 passengers to use existing tickets without requiring additional infrastructure.

• Smart Transit Solutions: The AFC system incorporates cutting-edge automation, ensuring smooth passenger flow and optimized fare management.

3. Implementation & Future Prospects

The project includes installation, testing, technical support, and maintenance, with full operation expected by late 2026. This initiative strengthens Straffic’s position as a leader in intelligent transportation solutions, paving the way for future expansions in Gwangju Metro Line 2 Phases 2 and 3.

Challenges

As of 2021 Line 1 consists of twenty stations. Most trains run between Pyeongdong and Sotae, with about one train per hour continuing towards Nokdong.

Line 2 was originally planned as a circle line, but the Gwangju City Government also considered a 'South-North type' as well. After the results of a public hearing conducted in 2019 construction started as originally planned, with the first section of the line being scheduled to open in 2023.

Phases 2 and 3 were scheduled to open in 2024 and 2025, initially. As of 2024, the opening of the first phase, a 20-station 17 km (11 mi) route to the south of the city, has been pushed back to 2026. The second phase, scheduled to open in 2029, will be 38 km (24 mi) long and will complete the loop. A third phase, 4.8 km (3.0 mi) long, will be a branch that serves the southeastern suburbs of Gwangju.
