Introduction
Since its founding in 2013, STraffic has become Korea’s leading integrated transportation IT solutions provider, specializing in toll systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). As the pioneer of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology in Korea, STraffic has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation in automated tolling systems, including the Hi-Pass system. With expertise rooted in decades of experience from Samsung Electronics, STraffic has expanded its solutions to global markets, securing projects in Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, and various large-scale infrastructure developments in Korea.
Challenges
Transitioning from traditional tolling to MLFF technology posed several challenges, particularly in ensuring seamless vehicle recognition and payment processing across multiple lanes without requiring vehicles to slow down. Additionally, international expansion required STraffic to adapt its advanced toll systems to different regulatory environments and technological infrastructures. The implementation of a smart tolling system on the Gwangan Bridge, Korea’s first MLFF-based bridge toll, required overcoming technical complexities related to automated license plate recognition and wireless communication for toll collection.
Solution
STraffic developed a next-generation smart tolling system that integrates AI-driven license plate recognition, deep learning-based object tracking, mobile payments, and GPS data. The company successfully introduced MLFF tolling on major highways, tunnels, and bridges, including the Gwangan Bridge and Seoul-Jemulpo Tunnel, enhancing transportation efficiency without disrupting traffic flow. Additionally, STraffic incorporated CCTV-based incident detection systems in deep underground tunnels, ensuring real-time monitoring and rapid emergency responses. These efforts established STraffic as a global leader in smart tolling innovation.
Result
The implementation of STraffic’s MLFF tolling system has drastically improved traffic flow and reduced congestion in high-traffic areas such as Centum City and the Haeundae district of Busan. The Gwangan Bridge smart tolling system streamlined payment processes, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop or slow down while ensuring toll accuracy. Meanwhile, the Seoul-Jemulpo Tunnel MLFF toll system reduced travel time through the congested area to just eight minutes. STraffic’s deep learning-based license plate recognition technology achieved an impressive 99.9% accuracy, demonstrating its effectiveness in transportation management. Through strategic expansions, STraffic continues to lead the global transportation IT industry, enhancing efficiency, safety, and convenience in road infrastructure.
